Carbs

here are bad carbohydrates and good carbohydrates. Don't you know that? People who are into "diet" or "losing weight" tend to avoid carbs in general. But they don't know how to distinguish bad carbohydrates from good ones. Let us define Carbohydrates first. Carbs are combination of starches, sugar and fiber that provide the body with fuel it needs for physical activity by breaking down into glucose. Glucose is a type of sugar that our cells use it as source for daily activities. People eat good carbohydrates are less likely to accumulate body fat. Now, what are bad carbs and good carbs?

Bad carbs are foods that have been processed such as flour, refined sugar, and white rice. You can digest these carbs faster but they can cause rise in sugar that cause to weight gain. Since this year started, I eat brown rice a lot. I have white rice in some occasions. White rice is not good for us.

Good carbs can be found whole grains, beans, fruits, and vegetables, which also offer lots of additional health benefits, including heart disease and cancer prevention. They can’t be digested as easily. And it keeps your sugar and insulin levels on balance.

Coffee

Coffee drinking does not appear to increase a person’s risk of early death. Research shows,it cuts a person’s chances of heart disease. Researchers that coffee drinkers, particularly the women, experienced a small decline in death rates from heart disease. Drinking decaffeinated coffee was linked with a small turn down of reduction in overall mortality risk. Coffee is a great source of antioxidants, substances that may protect against radicals that can damage cells and play a great role in heart disease, cancer and other diseases.I drink coffee once in a blue moon. I don't like it that much because it makes me more hyper. But I don't know how true that coffee doesn't contribute to heart risk. Maybe this is just a propaganda? Or facts?

Burning calories

These are the tips that I found by surfing the net. These are unnoticeable ways to burn calories. Try and you will lose weight before you know it.

1.Take the escalator but climb the stairs while you ride. Just 5 minutes of stair climbing burns 144 calories.

2. Instead of piling items on the stairs so you can take them upstairs at once, take them one at a time.

3. When cooling your heels while waiting in a doctor's office, tore, or airport, stay on your feet standing burns 36 more calories per hour than sitting.

4. Rake leaves instead of using a leaf blower. You'll burn 50 more calories every half hour.

5. Scrub your floors more often. Putting some elbow grease into cleaning floors is more intense than vacuuming and it makes your floors look better to boot.

6. Chew sugarless gum. Research has found that the action of jaw muscles alone burns about 11 calories an hour.

7. Wash your car by hand instead of taking it through the automatic car wash place. You'll burn an extra 280 calories in an hour.

8. Play with kids: Impromptu games of basketball, touch football, or tag -- or just jumping rope or throwing a ball -- will help you use energy and set a good example of active play for the children. Calories burned: 80 to 137 every 10 minutes.

Sunscreen

We are really getting closer to Summertime. It is getting warmer and warmer every day. The sun is so hot. People would like to do more outdoor activities like barbecue, swimming, camping and the like. When you are planning on doing these things, you must include sunblock. Sunblock is important especially during the hot season. The UV rays, as we know, can cause cancer and other skin diseases. So don't forget to use sun protection lotion with high SPF like Oil of Olay SPF 30 comple daily moisturizer. I really like it a lot. I'd recommend it to every one. You can find this at any supermarket store or online.

Vitamin D

Studies has shown that women with breast cancer have deficiency in Vitamin D. It is recommended if a woman as premature cancer should take Vitamin D supplements. This stresses that there's a healthy level for vitamin D and, if you are deficient, you have an increased risk of metastasis, but if you go above at a certain point your risk of goes up. Vitamin D is a group of fat-soluble the two major forms of which are vitamin D2 and vitamin D3. Vitamin D3 is produced in skin exposed to sunlight, specifically ultraviolet B radiation. Sources of Vitamin D are fortified foods such as milk products and exposure to sunlight.

Healthy beverage

Soda is not really good for you. Coca-cola, Pepsi and many more are high in fructose. If you are craving sweets or refreshments, you can have the healthy alternatives. Here they are:

1. Light yogurt and fruit smoothie. Creamy and sweet, high in calcium and only 174 calories per cup.

2. Tomato juice - contains beta carotene and lycopene

3. Organic soda that doesn’t contain high fructose. I get this kind of Soda from Safeway sometimes. The brand is O- Organics. They taste really good. They are fruit-flavored soda. No caffeine at all. It is organic. But it is best to avoid any kind of soda because carbonation affects the stomach. However, carbonation and phosphoric acid in the soda can cause calcium loss in the bones.

4. Apple cider. I love apple cider.

5. Tea or coffee, unsweetened.

FPIES

What is FPIES? Studies found out that rice can cause a form of gut inflammation in some infants. This is called, food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome or FPIES. It is an inflammatory reaction of the digestive system to certain food proteins such as cow's milk, soy, meat and grains. Infants with this syndrome will suffer vomiting and diarrhea within roughly 2 hours of eating those food proteins. Australian researchers found that over 16 years, 14 children came to their hospital with FPIES. Rice remains a hypoallergenic food and it is first recommended as the first solid for infants. Be aware of this syndrome.

dealing with emotions

Do you feel oversensitive sometimes? You might be thinking that something is really wrong with you. Well, I hope this article helps and guides you in improving your emotional health.

Recognize your emotions and trace the root cause. Sort out the causes of sadness, stress and anxiety in your life. These are the following helpful tips:

Express your feelings in appropriate ways. If feelings of stress, sadness or anxiety are causing physical problems, keeping these feelings inside can make you feel worse. It’s OK to let your loved ones know when something is bothering you. Sometimes, we tend to displace our emotions so bad. More often, we use any escapes to deal with our emotions. We have to face our emotions and feel it. Share it with God.

Live a balanced life. Try not to obsess about the problems at work, school or home that lead to negative feelings. This doesn’t mean you have to pretend to be happy when you feel stressed, anxious or upset. It’s important to deal with these negative feelings, but try to focus on the positive things in your life too. You may want to use a journal to keep track of things that make you feel happy or peaceful. Some research has shown that having a positive outlook can improve your quality of life and give your health a boost. You may also need to find ways to let go of some things in your life that make you feel stressed and overwhelmed. Make time for things you enjoy.

Calm your mind and body. Relaxation methods, such as meditation, are useful ways to bring your emotions into balance. Meditation is a form of guided thought. It can take many forms. For example, you may do it by exercising, stretching or breathing deeply. Ask your family doctor for advice about relaxation methods.

Take care of yourself. To have good emotional health, it’s important to take care of your body by having a regular routine for eating healthy meals, getting enough sleep and exercising to relieve pent-up tension. Avoid overeating and don’t abuse drugs or alcohol. Using drugs or alcohol just causes other problems, such as family and health problems.

Being a vegetarian

As a vegetarian, eating healthy foods makes a really big difference. Before I came here in the U.S. I used to eat meat every day and I ate junk foods at lot. It was my husband who introduced and educated me about eating more healthy foods. Now, I see a big difference. The flab on my abs is getting smaller (I used to drink beer now I don’t), I don’t constipate that much (I constipate if I don’t drink a lot of water), my skin is more radiant than before and I feel great as a whole being. Actually, it takes sacrifice and time to be a vegetarian. Sometimes, I still miss yummy fried chicken. I have to resist. Once in a blue moon, I eat chicken but it is not as tasty as vegetables to me. It tastes bland and dry. If you want to be a vegetarian, just take your time and apply a little sacrifice. That’s all.

Healthy snack bars

Are you a health conscious person? It pays when you eat healthy foods. Junk foods are very tempting and mouthwatering. We see advertisements and pictures everywhere. Unfortunate, we are misled by these advertisements. Bad snack foods are being advertised as good and healthy. If you try to look and read the ingredients and nutritional facts on the label, you will see and know that they are actually not good for you. Some of the snack foods have high in cholesterol, saturated fats, sugar or salt.

We should get healthy snack bars instead of junk foods. Snack bars are nutritious and don’t contain so much calories like for example the Promax bars, which contain low calories and high protein. Thus, this is also great for losing weight. Moreover, it contains vitamins, Minerals & Antioxidants. Get high protein bars that are exceptionally tasty and great for snacks. These protein bars come in double fudge brownie, cookies ‘n cream, nutty butter crisp and a lot of more. It is all natural energy bar!

Be active!

Do you think you are overweight? Many people are frustrated that they can’t do anything about it. They think it is hereditary and part of their genes. Yes, that is scientifically true. There’s a way to beat that family history by just getting 3-4 hours of simple and moderate activity a day. Curious? Doing some activities for a few hours every day might help you lose your weight and eliminate excess fats. Think about it, take a brisk walk for an hour or so instead of watching TV. Don’t park your car really close to the store but take advantage of walking. Use stairs instead of elevators, walk instead of driving as much as possible, and do some fun activities such as playing in the park, swimming and many others. Be active.

Chew gum and recovered faster from Surgery

Surgeons have discovered chewing gums can help patients recover from colon surgery faster. Gum juice may actually fuel up gut hormones and pancreatic secretions. They made an analysis of five studies with a total of 158 patients. These patients (who had surgery) improved from colon surgery that chewed sugarless gum three times a day for five to 45 minutes while others didn’t chew any gums at all. The patients who chewed gum had recovered faster while the patients who did not chew gum stayed more days to recover from the surgery. The sugarless gum has artificial sweetener called Sorbitol and is know to have a laxative effect. This sounds sensible. This might really work. I guess, whenever I have constipation, I'll try to chew gum. Let's see what the effect is.
